Spend an initial night in San Francisco, exploring an undulating city and attuning to West Coast life. Next day, head out on the highway beyond the city limits to the Mediterranean climate of California’s famed winelands in the Napa Valley. Later, join the Pacific Coast Highway for a magnificent cruise towards the ‘village in a forest’, Carmel. Clint Eastwood may no longer be Mayor, but the town maintains its distinctive style and both residents and visitors continue to feel lucky. Let your motor run for a further 246-miles and the Danish-influenced (yes there is such a thing!) town of Solvang, complete with Hans Christian Anderson statue! Explore the quaint streets, stopping off to visit the occasional bakery or restaurant offering a taste of Denmark. Back on the road, the mountains reach down to the Pacific surf for 27-miles through Malibu, Santa Monica and Long Beach. However, a dramatic contrast lies ahead during the 280-miles of shimmering desert that characterise the route to the bright lights big city of Las Vegas. Spend the day, and hopefully not your children’s inheritance, indulging in 24-hour shopping, gambling and partying. Alternatively, swap one heady abyss for another and take in Grand Canyon National Park for one of the world’s must-see natural wonders. San Diego is next on route, visiting Mission Bay and Laguna Beach before looping back to LA via in time to drop off the keys and boarding a homeward jet plane from LAX.
