Why risk travelling with the world’s favourite airline when it’s so easy to hop across the Channel and drive to the Dordogne, or take one of the budget airline routes to Malaga, followed by a short transfer to the mountains of Andalucia? Walks Worldwide offers two self-guided walking holidays, Dordogne Encounters and The Alpujarras Circuit with daily seasonal departures throughout 2007.

The Dordogne is strewn with caves, beautiful Medieval churches, elegant Renaissance châteaux, sunflower fields, walnut orchards, not forgetting rich Périgord cuisine and superb wine. Armed with route notes and maps, set out from Les Eyzies for the historic town of Sarlat, visiting the dramatic ruins of Château de Commarque, Beynac Castle, the famous 12th century bastide town of Domme, and fairytale Château de Montfort en route.

Andalucia’s Alpujarran Mountain range is an area of outstanding natural beauty and great ecological diversity. Here, donkeys outnumber cars two to one and life ticks along at the same relaxing pace as it has done for hundreds of years. Spend a couple of relaxing nights in the charming village of Mairena, then transfer by road to Trevelez for the start of a 4-day trek – for the energetic, there may be time to climb Mulhacen (3482 metres), Spain's highest mountain. Walk a gradually descending route along acequia waterways and ancient trails, passing old Moorish silk factories and experiencing a flavour of some of the most typical and untouched villages in the Alpujarras. Returning to Mairena, tackle another high peak, enjoy a gentle ramble along the tranquil terraces of the western Alpujarras or explore the region’s Moorish architecture.

Both holidays include hotel and guesthouse accommodation, most meals, baggage transfers, route notes and maps. Channel crossings and flights not included.
