BEAR-BACK HORSERIDING
Equine Adventures is offering 10-day ‘Grizzly Experience’ horseback tours through southwest British Columbia’s Chilcotin Mountains during prime Brown (Grizzly) Bear viewing season, departing London 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th June and 7th July 2007.
Riders pick their Mountain Cayuse mounts from Chilcotin Ranch and after getting acquainted set off into the wilderness for the Mountain Alpine Camp with guides and pack horses in tow. Guides are on the look-out for rubbed trees with hair samples and claw scratches, a clear, if unnerving, sign of bears in residence… Upon arrival at the log-cabin/camp, fires are lit, great mountain views are enjoyed and a hearty repast prepared. As light fades senses are heightened in preparedness for three days of bear encounters. Early starts see rides along spectacular mountain trails and lush alpine meadows filled with summer berries. Knowledgeable guides share information on flora, fauna and bear spoor along the way, enabling riders to deduce age, sex and behavioural traits. Observations are recorded and used in a local Grizzly Bear study project. Although sightings can never be guaranteed every effort will be made to maximise the chances of safe bear encounters. There may even be an opportunity to crawl inside a Grizzly den, presuming no one is at home… At the end of the trail, riders return to Chilcotin Ranch, say good bye to their four-legged friends and spend a final night in the mountains before heading to Vancouver and homeward flights. This tour is suitable for confident novice to experienced riders.
The tour costs £2,175 (June) or £2,395 (July) including scheduled international flights, hotel, ranch, log-cabin and tented camp accommodation, most meals, tack hire and expert guiding.
