LA GRAND TRAVERSER D'ALPES FRANÇAISES
THE SPECTACULAR GR5
The classic GR5 runs from Ostend on the Belgian coast to Nice on the shores of the Mediterranean. During the summer months, trekking through magnificent alpine pastures, rugged high passes, ancient villages and flower-filled meadows is impressive. Walks Worldwide offer a 15-day guided walk - with full baggage transfers - of the southern section of the GR5, from Geneva to Nice, departing Geneva or Lyon 3rd July 2007.
The tour begins with a train journey to the small town of Modane. From here, climb through forest and wild lunar landscape to Col de la Vallée Étroite (2,434m), annexed by the French in 1947 it still retains its Italian roots and wild desolate atmosphere. Zigzag over open pasture to Col des Thures (2,194m) in sight of the rocky towers of Seru and Thabor, then on through sparse larch woods to Montgenèvre. Next up is Queyras Regional Park, created in 1977 to protect the flora, fauna and to promote local rural crafts. Further on, descend to the fort and village of Chateau Queyras built in two parts on opposite sides of the river and surrounded by lush conifer trees. Ascend steep pine forest, past huge eroded gullies and over coarse scree slopes to Ceillac where walkers have time to relax before climbing some of the highest cols and soaking up the most spectacular mountain scenery on the GR5. Later, at the beautiful and remote turquoise Lac Sainte Anne (2,415m), set beneath a cirque of towering grey cliffs with a tiny chapel nearby, find a perfect spot for a well earned refreshing dip! The trail then traverses a chaotic boulder field to the V- shaped Col de la Columbière (2,237m), before entering forests, terraced flower and herb fields to emerge amongst pretty mountain villages and saying goodbye to the big snow-streaked peaks. On to Mercantour National Park, a climb to Col de Crousette (2,480m), over open slopes, past ancient barns and St. Sebastian chapel with its marvellous 16th century frescoes precedes journey’s end at Aspremont where a final celebratory evening is spent reflecting on a strenuous but highly rewarding tour.
The tour costs £950 including accommodation in hotels and refuges, full baggage transfers, most meals, service of an experienced guide. Flights are not included but are available through Walks Worldwide.
