Press Digest 3rd April 2007

Good Afternoon,

Sunday's spring sunshine was of sufficient intensity to drive the children outside, enabling the cheerful extension of their innocent blitzkrieg to the lawn, garden and beyond. Such was the spring mood that a trip to the municipal waste recycling depot was inevitable. Trailer-load of annoying junk, including the odd surreptitious plastic toy (yes, I know I'm a grumpy old git) in tow I was king of the road.

Two motorcycles pass my juggernaut in the opposite direction doing about warp factor five, in contrast another couple overtake me from behind, lazily filtering back into the line of traffic at the appearance of an oncoming car.

At the depot I do something only a man's brain will allow and reverse my car and trailer toward the recycling bins. Nodding in recognition to the site's caretaker, who knows my trailer is 6inches too long and should require a permit, I'm away in no time.

Approaching the main-road it looks like there's a bonfire, though it's very black smoke and attracting more of a crowd than one might expect for such a mundane event. A bearded man can see my hesitation and jogs to unburden his shocking shocking news. Now I see the flames rising some five feet from a wrecked motorcycle lying in the road. Close by, a man in leathers sits like a child, legs extended in front, beside a motionless prone figure already partly covered by a white sheet. I can almost feel his shock. Too beautiful a day for such despair. In the background an ambulance arrives. I leave, picking my way through the debris of shattered lives.

More proof for the non-existence of God.

Have a good week.
