SHACKLETON’S LEGENDARY EXPEDITION

ANTARCTIC VOYAGE

Synonymous with the tortuous northerly drift and legendary voyage of Shackleton’s 1914 Endurance expedition, the Weddell Sea is now the focus for Peregrine Adventures’ 12-night journey aboard the Peregrine Voyager. This exceptional Polar adventure, exploring the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Peninsula combines with a remarkable sense of history, departing Ushuaia 28th December 2007.

Board the Peregrine Voyager in Ushuaia and set sail through the Beagle Channel for the South Shetland Islands and waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula. Cruise through some of the most dramatic scenery the ‘White Continent’ has to offer especially at Paradise Harbour or Hope Bay, where icebergs of all shapes and sizes, carved from glaciers, eroded into spectacular natural sculptures. As well as the team of naturalists and expedition staff on board to keep a constant look out for whales and seabirds from on deck, seminars on wildlife, polar ice and Antarctic history prepare travellers’ for the adventures ahead. A range of other activities is available throughout the voyage including zodiac cruising amongst the icebergs, hiking on shore and sea kayaking. Continuing on, and a visit to Snow Hill Island, base for the Heroic Age Nordenskjold expedition, and then Seymour Island where fossils of the world’s largest penguins are still being uncovered, offer further opportunities to observe Antarctic wildlife including colonies of Emperor Penguins. Heading south among the islands of the western shore of the Weddell Sea, the Peregrine Voyager follows virtually the same route as Sir Ernest Shackleton who drifted on ice with his crew after the Endurance was trapped and then crushed by sea ice. If sea conditions are favourable, it may be possible to visit the remote and rocky shores of Elephant Island, home of these heroic Endurance sailors, who for many months waited here eagerly for news of their captain’s rescue mission. From the flooded crater of Deception Island to the mesmerising array of colours from the Aurora Australis, this is the expedition of a lifetime.

The expedition voyage costs from £4,425 p/p (voyage only) including full board accommodation onboard ship, all shore excursions and expertly guided wildlife viewing.
