Want to swim with the big fish? Last month in southern Belize, divers encountered 19 Whale Sharks on one single boat dive! In the months of April, May and June, these giants of the ocean are attracted to Belize’s southern Barrier Reef by the annual spawning of the Cubera Snappers. Belize’s underwater world exceeds every other Caribbean dive destination in diversity, size and scope. Over 185 miles from north to south, the Belize Barrier Reef system is the greatest stretch of coral in the Western Hemisphere. The Gladden Spit Marine Reserve, located due south of Hamansi in the southern region of the barrier reef, is famous for its Whale Sharks. During the full moon phases of April, May and June, the giant Whale Sharks come to feast here on the spawn provided by the Cubera Snappers and other fish. It is common to see schools of snapper in the thousands, with hungry whale sharks passing through them, hoovering up the protein-rich eggs.
Guests are based at the eco-resort of Hamansi, a boutique-style hotel nestled within 21-acres of rare coastal forest, adjacent to a 12-mile stretch of beautiful beach. The hotel has an on-site PADI 5-Star Gold Palm Dive Centre with two fully equipped boats visiting amongst others, Gladden Spit, Glover’s Reef Atoll, Turneffe Islands Atoll, the Elbow, Lighthouse Reef, the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye.
