Zagreb
FIRST EDITION

Bradt’s first edition Zagreb city guide is the first dedicated English-language guidebook to Croatia’s charming Austro-Hungarian capital. Cover text invites travellers to visit the city and ‘take brunch with the president’ and they’re not joking. President Stipe Mesić still eschews his state residence for a private downtown abode and, according to authors Piers Letcher and Sarah Parkes, may be encountered often enough in one of his favourite Jelačić Square watering holes – a unique people’s president indeed.
Though tourist numbers to Croatia as a whole now exceed pre-war levels, Zagreb has till now remained lesser-visited. However, recent low-cost flight connections from London have put Zagreb on the short-break map and now one of Europe’s Habsburg gems is only two hours away. The city’s compact size, lively café society, hip bars and stylish clubs elegantly accompany a sparkling cultural scene of music, opera and ballet. Chapters in Bradt’s new guide cover history, politics, transport, accommodation and dining on all budgets and three well-researched self-guided walking tours. For those in a consummate scramble, a section on ‘unmissables’ cuts to the chase, featuring the all encompassing Mimara Museum, the twin-spired Zagreb Cathedral and its huge organ, together with the intriguing Meštrović Atelier gallery, named after Croatia’s most famous sculptor. Those on a more relaxed schedule are invited to stray beyond the city, to the summit of Mount Medvednica by cable car, the beautiful Plitvice Lakes or to follow the 25km Plešivička Vinska Cesta wine route through timeless villages. Clear street maps and tram routes combine with an immediately useful language section allowing travellers to say a confident Bok Bok (hi/bye) to Zagreb.

Piers Letcher was born and educated in the UK and has lived in France since 1984. As an independent writer and photographer he has published 17 books, along with more than a thousand newspaper and magazine articles and hundreds of photographs. Piers has also worked for the United Nations, where he wrote speeches for many prominent people, including Nelson Mandela.

Sarah Parkes is a highly successful freelance writer, also working intermittently as a consultant with the United Nations in Geneva.
