BORDER CROSSING ARGENTINA TO CHILE ON HORSEBACK
Equine Adventures offers a ‘once in a lifetime’ adventure - a 14-day horse-riding holiday incorporating an epic 8-day ride across the mighty Andes from Argentina to Chile. This journey was originally undertaken by Bernado O’Higgins and Jose de San Martin, two of South America’s most celebrated heroes, in the liberation of Chile from the Spanish. Tours depart London 28th November and 13th December 2007. (Later departures also available).
Arrive in Buenos Aires and fly onwards to San Martin de Los Andes where, after a scenic drive to the comfortable Estancia Huechahue, the day may be rounded off with a ride to admire panoramic views and see the nesting sites of eagles and condors in nearby cliffs. Rested and raring to go, spend the next day riding through streams and canyons, cantering across bird-filled water meadows and on to the summit of Chenque Hill to fully appreciate the vastness of Patagonia. The adventure continues on day four with the start of an epic 8-day ride across the Andes. The first four days are spent crossing the Andean Steppes, fording rivers, passing through Indian reservations, over spectacular ridges and through magnificent gorges. Nights are spent snuggling into sleeping bags whilst camping by rivers under Southern Hemisphere skies. Having stopped for a traditional casado lunch in a forest of Monkey Puzzle Trees at the base of Lanin Volcano, reach the Chilean border, pass through immigration and customs formalities and continue on a fresh horse down the western slopes of the Andes. The next three days are spent riding through Southern Beech forests with spectacular views of lakes and volcanoes. Riding down steep slopes and over a variety of very different terrain, expect some faster riding. On the last evening, reach the Huife Hotsprings Hotel, where comfortable beds, thermal pools, Jacuzzis and massages await. After breakfast a 5-hour drive takes you back to Estancia Huechahue for a final evening.
The tour costs £3,440 p/p (November departure) including international scheduled flights, domestic connections and transfers, estancia and camping accommodation, most meals, locally bred horses, tack and expert guiding.
