NOT SO LONESOME GEORGE? LOVE ON THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS FOR THE RAREST CREATURE ALIVE
The hope of love springs eternal, even when you’re the last one of your kind on earth… Scientists now believe the right girl might still be out there for Lonesome George, the sole surviving member of the Pinta Island sub-species of Giant Tortoise whose tragic status sees him listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the rarest creature alive. Peregrine Adventures still has availability on 10-day tours, incorporating a 7-night cruise, departing Quito on selected dates throughout August 07.
The recent discovery of another male tortoise on the nearby Isabela island who shares 50% of his DNA has raised hopes that a full or hybrid Pinta female could yet be found for the lonely tortoise. In the meantime, well-wishers can visit George at the Charles Darwin Research Station as part of the Galapagos in Depth tour with Peregrine Adventures. Sailing aboard the Peregrine Endeavour, the trip offers the ultimate exploration of the legendary Galapagos Islands, a World Heritage sanctuary lying 1000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador. Home to Blue-footed Boobie, pelican and frigatebird, Land and Marine Iguana, sealion, Fur Seal, dolphin, whale and sea turtle – as well as Giant Tortoise – the islands’ isolation means a quarter of all species are endemic and much of the wildlife has no instinctive fear of man.
The tour costs £1,810 p/p including arrival transfer, domestic flights, seven-night cruise, most meals and activities plus the services of an experienced English-speaking naturalist guide. International flights and park entrance fees are not included.
